 Eider and silk - amazing what nature has to offer

Animals such as eider ducks and silkworms provide us with true marvels that surpass all understanding and are beyond the comprehension of the human mind.

Anyone who has discovered the voluptuous sensation of the softness of the combination of “eiderdown and natural silk” knows what natural products—exclusively from nature—mean for the quality of sleep in its most beautiful form.

The fabric used for the covers of normal duvets, filled with goose or duck down, requires a very tight weave to prevent the fibers from passing through the fabric.

But for eiderdown, due to its texture of quilted flakes clumped together, it is possible to use finer fabrics for the cover, such as silk.

This precious material is the subject of the following wonderful Chinese anecdote: Standing at the foot of a mulberry tree, Si Ling Chi, Empress of ancient China, saw how a silkworm wove its cocoon with a shiny thread. Then a fanciful idea came to her mind: “I would be irresistibly attractive if I too could be surrounded by such fine, shiny threads...”

Thus was discovered the fascination with silk five thousand years ago!

In our Dauny workshop, the covers for our eiderdown duvets are made from Tussah silk (Shantung), a natural silk produced by the mulberry silkworm.

Its irregular thread gives the fabric a characteristic fineness and incredible softness to the touch.

Among the finest fabrics, also reserved for eiderdown duvets, we use Jacquard fabric with fine tone-on-tone patterns or the finest long-staple Egyptian cotton batiste.

The eider duck

The eider duck lives in the most inhospitable northern regions. Ducklings, which are born without feathers, must be able to survive the freezing polar winds.

Remarkably, unlike any other chick, young ducklings benefit from incomparable cozy protection. They live snuggled up in the bottom of the nest, which is lined with fine down that the mother duck has plucked from her breast with her beak.

This down is like wadding fibers that are stuck together so that the wind cannot scatter and carry them away.

This precious down, unique in its kind, is practically weightless, but its fibrous strands intertwine to absorb cold air and convert it into gentle warmth, creating a cozy and soft nest.

If you cup a small amount of eider down in your hand, you will be surprised to feel a mysterious source of warmth and a pleasant sensation of extreme softness.

This precious material is scarce, and the quantity harvested depends on the size of the nests.

This delicate harvest is done by hand and only once the duck family has left the nest.

Eiderdown more precious than gold.

Eiderdown is an exceptional, rare, and luxurious material. It is one of nature's elite products.

It is a gift that polar ducks give to the people of the polar regions.

Their gratitude is undoubtedly expressed through the wonderful and extremely rare coexistence of the people of the Far North with the ducks that live in the wild. It is unique and surprising!

Eiders are ducks that live in the vast arid and icy expanses along the shores of polar lakes and seas.

They are very shy by nature, but it is amazing to see how trusting they are of humans during the breeding season. This trust is not extended to all humans, but only to certain families. Families who have been caring for eider nests for years.

What does “caring” mean?

The “human host family” helps prepare the nesting site for the arrival of the eider duck to lay her eggs.

The site is prepared by digging holes in the ground or using a variety of other methods, such as placing old tires on the ground and lining them with a little hay.

The ducks then come and settle in one of the prepared nests.

Through the hormonal process of molting, the fine down covering the animal's chest comes off.

The duck then uses her beak to carefully line the hollowed-out nest with it, creating a soft paradise ready to receive eggs.

But in this peaceful world, death lurks.

/p>Indeed, on the rocks and in the trees, there are hungry birds of prey, and on the ground, foxes prowl in search of prey. The eggs and ducklings are a godsend for them.

That is why, during the brooding period, the farmer watches over the nests at night with a rifle in his hand to ward off predators. But he does not only protect the young eider offspring. When the mother duck leaves her nest to drink some water, the farmer approaches the nest to carefully replace the damp tufts of down with dry hay.

Moisture is a threat to the eggs, which can rot before hatching.

Through the symbiosis between animals and humans, an incredible bond is created between the two.

It is something as exceptional and unique as the quality of eider down.

It is amid this mystery that ducklings are born. They grow up, and then comes the day when the whole family flies away to their favorite bodies of water.

Then, from their status as tame “domestic animals,” the ducks revert to being fierce “wild animals.”

What they leave behind after their departure is a precious gift for their host and protector: fine eider down, which the farmer carefully collects gram by gram and then takes to the collection center.

The precious material is covered in droppings and mixed with hay and sand.

The cleaning process is done by hand by careful and experienced workers.

It is meticulous work that takes hours.

The size of the harvest varies each year, which explains the fluctuation in prices on the global market.

It is somewhat comparable to another precious and rare product of nature: truffles.

It can therefore be said that this gift of nature is more precious than gold
